Shipmasters in Early Barbados
Abstract
The Rise of the English Shipping Industry in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries by Ralph Davies provides an overview of the role played by shipmasters. Dr. Cragg’s specific inquiry into 49 shipmasters in Barbados during the 1640s and 1650s shows that these mariners were not as successful or have as much invested directly in their voyages as the general class of shipmasters described by Ralph Davies.
