William Mitchell’s career may be traced by referring to Royal Navy – Ships, Captain, Stations 1773 – 1807 (2 vols) by Derek Cripps (privately published in USA)
Cripps used ADM.8 series in The National Archives (The present Disposal of His Majesty’s Ships and Vessels in Sea Pay) and contemporary Navy Lists by David Steel.
This shows him as being in command of:
PIGMY from 5/1782 to 7/1783 as a Master and Commander
CALYPSO from 2/1787 to 8/1790 M & C
REGULUS in 11/1790 as a Post Captain
NONSUCH in 5/1795
SALISBURY from 7/1795 to 5/1796
ADAMANT from 9/1797 to 10/1797
ISIS from 9/1797 to 7/1799
RESOLUTION from 8/1799 to 12/1799
ZEALAND from 7/1800 to 4/1802
