Many thank for that steer. As you say, since he started as an AB he must have had prior service in merchant ships (as was common). Certainly this forum has already generated enough material to justify a re-write of his ODNB entry, and maybe someone with easy access to TNA will follow up & research the 1768-1777 gap using the lines you suggest.
