    Good question. I don’t think I’ve ever read a description of that during battle.

    There was a considerable amount of shot prepared on deck in the central and bulwark garlands, but I suppose it possible to run out in a sustained engagement.

    They’d be block & tackled up on deck though, not carried.

    I would think the smaller shot could be carried by one man with a shoulder yoke & bucket arrangement, or by two men in a long case (like the cartridge case “salt boxes” you mentioned).

    I can also conceive round shot being wrapped & twisted into in a reinforced hammock/sling (like sausage links) and then slung along a pole and carried between two men. Same for the bags of grape shot.
