Stationary Cumulus clouds often build up over mountain peaks by mid-morning, and, providing that you have some idea of where you are, they may be taken as a good sign of land not yet in view. However, these clouds can also obscure peaks that might otherwise be in view, so the best time for spotting peaks on the horizon is during early morning.
Rarer are mountain wave clouds that flow to leeward of a mountain range & have a smooth ‘flying-saucer’ appearance. If seen on the windward horizon they are an excellent sign that land is ahead.
