For SNR members the specification for the 1765 figurehead is readily available: ‘Carved Work of the Victory 1765’, Mariner’s Mirror 8:3 (1922), pp. 281-83.
So far as I understand it the norm was to paint white, then coat with a varnish that created a pseudo gilded effect.
