Matt your fire bucket is quite different from the leather buckets which hang above the Victory’s quarterdeck today and one assumes are correct for Nelson’s time. It is difficult to believe that your bucket had any association with the fire buckets aboard Nelson’s ships. It is crudely made for a flag-ship and would seem to have metal hoops and handle with curious hooks either side to fix onto I know not what.
After Trafalgar and the Napoleonic wars many battle-ships-of-the-line went to the breakers or received “large” repairs, Victory was one of them. Some of the wood and fixings from these ships were turned into souvenirs for the adoring public to purchase; much was stamped with ships’ names to give it authenticity. I would suggest your bucket was one of these souvenirs although the wood could actually be from the Victory.
