    Names and descriptions of Naval and Military deserters were usually circulated through the Police Gazette – although whether this applied to someone who deserted on a foreign station I am unsure. The Police Gazette is available (by subscription) online from the British Newspaper Archive

    In 1882 he would have been subject to the Naval Discipline Act 1866 which may be seen here:

    See paragraphs 19 – 26 which specify the punishment he was liable for if arrested, also the punishments that those who assisted or aided deserters
