    Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you again. I am in touch with the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. For them it is all about provenance and confirmation of the identity of the sitter. Working myself for the Secretariat to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (similar in some way to the Arts Council in England), I am familiar with acquisition processes for Canadian museums and I know provenance is key. I fully understand that I need some evidence behind the facts. The immediate provenance for this portrait is unusual, and some people have simply no interest for old objects and artefacts…

The painting of Nelson wounded is depicting Josiah amongst other officers but the main character in Nelson, and Josiah is certainly not depicted accurately.

I would love to reunite young Josiah with other portraits of Nelson, Fanny (and Horatia) that are already in their collection, in order to complete the large family picture.

To be honest, I had no clue of who was Capt Josiah Nisbet before December 2020. I am reading various biographies about Lord Nelson and Fanny (I an awaiting the two volumes by John Sugden sent by mail). I also read a monograph about Josiah Nibest published in Australia in the 1990s and a recent novel by Oliver Greeves. All the story is fascinating. I will read you book too!

As you said, I do not see why the label would not be accurate, and at some point in the history of this painting someone took care that the identity of the sitter would not be lost by adding a typewritten label on top of the old one which was in rough shape. The typewritten label is certainly a transcript of the old handwritten label.

It is great that you own this spoon. Do you have information about its provenance and how it ended in this auction sale?

    Remi
