I’ve consulted Des Pawson, world-renowned expert on knots and sailors’ ropework. This is what he says:
Sheaves are the wheel-like bit that rotates in the block. This is a full list of parts of the block:
The shell or body,
Eye, hook or strop,
Crown,
Cheek,
Score, (if rope stropped)
Swallow,
Sheave, (perhaps fitted with a coak or bush or even a roller bearing),
Pin, (perhaps under the tally plate),
Tally plate,
Becket (sometimes fitted at the tail),
Tail.
