    NOt sure if this will be seen by the original participant or not, but I can confirm that in the 17th century the word ‘sheave’ was not much used. As far as I am aware, every writer of lists of stores etc referred only to ‘shivers’, which, being often of brass and quite large, had a considerable value and were carefully inventoried.

    Rigging blocks mostly used sheaves made of lignum vitae, which was cheaper, with the brass sheaves used for fixed blocks in the ship’s sides, or in the bitt-pins, cat-blocks, etc.
