I recall that when Admiral Sir Nigel Essenhigh was First Sea Lord – late 1990s-2000 – his son, then I think a Lt-Cmdr, was the first Royal Navy officer to be taken into the US Navy temporarily as a genuine “exchange”, that is, with executive status within the operational US service. Many officers and ratings have been “exchanged” into each other’s naval services with observer status before and since, and I am not sure that Commander Essenhigh’s status has been repeated.
