    Oliver Warner ‘Life and Letters of VA Lord Collingwood’, page 214, records that Collingwood noted that, if and when he retired, the sinecure office would be set against his half pay. In his characteristic style he also wrote to his sister:
    “It is respectable to be so distinguished, but … I am jealous of their supposing such an excitement necessary to retain me.”
