I imagine that such a studio would have allowed processing of photographs for submission to the RN Hydrographer for inclusion in those invaluable Admiralty publications The Admiralty Sailing Directions (commonly refered to as “Pilot Books”). These were widely used as a reference source by both naval and merchant vessels for voyage planning and port entry.
