The ‘Mr Dawson’ concerned is James Dawson of George’s Place, Dublin. The claim was in his paper ‘On the Improvement of Steam-Packets’ published in The Repertory of Arts, Manufactures, and Agriculture [vol 43 second series], London 1823, p 23. It was perhaps the same James Dawson that patented a propellor in 1816.
