I found Six Frigates by Ian W.Toll, published by W.W. Norton in 2006 well worth reading on the subject. It is more balanced than most histories which as inferred by other contributors to this topic seem heavily influenced by the nationality of the writer.
William James’s Naval Occurrences of the War of 1812: A Full and Correct Account of the Naval War Between Great Britain and the United States of America,1812-1815 (London: Conway Maritime Press. Originally published between 1816-19), seems to be creeping back into favour.
