A lady belonging to the Hartlepool Headland Local History Group is keen to find out more about the attached medal (see photo). In particular why these medals were issued, and why this particular one was awarded. Did every shipwright who belonged to the union receive one, or did they do something special to receive it? On the reverse of this medal was ‘G.Tutill 83, City Road, London’ (George Tutill). Notes on the Sally Bosleys website that sold the medal say “In 1908, the union merged with the ‘Ship Constructive Association’ and the ‘Amalgamated Society of Drillers and Hole Cutters’ and renamed itself the ‘Ship Constructive and Shipwrights’ Association’ later changing this to the ‘Shipconstructors’ and Shipwrights’ Association’. At the beginning of 1963, it merged with the United Society of Boilermakers, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers.”

Not an expert but my suspicion would be for it being a member, that certainly was how the temperance and some other society medals worked then it was for all, so I would have thought it was similar and if for a particular level I would have expected it to say something. I partly think this as I think the George Tutill name is the manufacturer of it, his firm were manufacturers of regalia for supplying trade unions, Sunday schools, chapels, and friendly societies, so that makes sense. Although he died in 1887 the business continued until 1967 and their business address was 83 City Road, London (it was in Islington). If anyone else offers better then I will bow to their knowledge. But I hope that helps.
