I am looking for a biography of Nehemiah Bourne (fl. 1649-62), who served in the Parliamentary navy and after the Restoration moved to America. In the 1886 edition of the Dictionary of National Biography, vol. 6 (available online here: https://archive.org/details/dictionaryofnati06stepuoft/page/30/mode/2up), a note has been appended to his biography. It reads:
“Bourne, Nehemiah, ii 939a, This article needs revision. See Sir Charles Firth in Mariner’s Mirror xii, 254-56.” I’m having difficulty locating this text. Could anyone supply this bio?

The entire back catalogue of Mariner’s Mirror is available on-line. However, what was written in that 1926 MM issue & the 1886 DNB has long been superseded.
The latest ODNB entries on Nehemiah Bourne & his brother John date from as recently as 2008, and were written by Bernard Capp, author of Cromwell’s navy: the fleet and the English revolution, 1648–1660 (1989). See https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/3007 & https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/37210

See also the Bio of Bourne and his relatives by Captain William Chaplin, available on the Colonial Society of Massachusetts at:

Thank you, David and Frank. I’m aware of the Colonial Society content, but would like to see the current ODNB bio. Unfortunately, my county library system here (US) does not subscribe to the ODNB, which is quite expensive for researchers not affiliated with an institution, and that has hampered my research. I’ll see if there’s another way to access these valuable volumes. Thanks again.

Here are the current and the 1885 entries (in Word to preserve the formatting).

The correct MM reference if you want to pursue it is “vol 12(3) p237 : Bibliography of British naval lives, 1640-60. “Sailors of the Civil War, the
Commonwealth and the Protectorate.” Article by Charles H. Firth”

A belated thank you, Nicholas. I just now saw your posting and very much appreciate the two texts.
