I understand that there is a memorial in St. Peter’s Church, Petersfield, to Commander Loftus Jones RN, late of HM destroyer Shark, who died at Jutland. Does any member have a photograph of the memorial or could provide a transcription of the wording on the memorial?
The memorial consists of a very large Christ on the Cross on the north wall of St Peter’s Church, to the left of the main entrance.
The cross is about 4 metres high, and has an octagonal iron flower bed on a stone plinth at its base (sadly neglected). On it is a small unpolished brass plaque that is easy to miss. In plain lettering it merely states:
COMDR LOFTUS WM JONES
RN VC HMS SHARK
The memorial is in good condition and as it faces onto Petersfield’s main square it is in a very prominent position, though I suspect that few realise that it is a memorial, rather than an indication that this church is part of the ‘High Anglican’ tradition. I may say that I would have missed the fact that this was a memorial had I not had to bide my time outside waiting for a service to finish.
