      What was the sequence of cap tallies worn by the bearded sailor in the John Player tobacco advertisements? I believe that the original was HMS Invincible and that when the battle cruiser of that name was lost at Jutland in 1916 the name was changed to Hero.
      The company presented the original painting to HMS Excellent at Whale Island in about 1980 and the tally reads ‘Excellent’. There is an interesting tale to tell here which a fellow-member may be able to relate with authority.

        The name of the original sailor is disputed.
