In my Steering to Glory (Chatham, 2005) I deduced that the 282 cu. in. beer gallon is used because (a) this produces results closest to the stated capacities for warrants from 1757 onwards, and (b) elsewhere, wine measure (e.g. the daily beer issue) or Winchester measure (e.g. the pease issue) are always stated. But is there any real evidence for which gallon was used?
