Abstract

The origins of Chinese fishing and the enduring practices of Chinese fishermen are not commonly understood due to a lack of academic discussion on the subject. This article seeks to redress this shortfall in historical inquiry, by examining the different methods, instruments and vessels adopted by Chinese fishermen and in using selected examples from antiquity to the present, it uncovers a rich fishing heritage and culture, shaped by their skill, perseverance and ingenuity.
