By Lionel Casson, published November 1960

Abstract

Having offered in an earlier paper (MM, 43, 160–4) examples of images of sprit sails from Roman imperial times, the author now offers a relief in the archaeological museum of Thasos showing a sprit-rigged craft. Dated to the Hellenistic age, this takes the sprit rig back in all probability to the second century BC.
