Among the manuscripts at the National Maritime Museum is one of exceptional interest to the student of naval warfare. It is a journal, kept by an officer in the French flagship Bretagne, of the campaigns in the English Channel of 1778 and 1779. The journal for 1778 includes a full description of the Battle of Ushant.
