This article is a translated extract from Hammar’s monograph ‘John Ericssons Monitor och drabbningen på Hampton Roads’ (Stockholm, 1937). As a naval constructor and shipbuilder he brings that knowledge into his discussion of the revolutionary aspects of Ericsson’s design. Moreover he had worked in America, and met several of the protagonists involved with the Monitor.
