Abstract

This article investigates the tonnage and dimensions of Drake’s ship by following a trail of clues, working from the dimensions of the dock at Deptford, through the reckoning used before 1581 and in 1628, to a statement of tonnage in a letter from Don Francisco to the Viceroy of New Spain.
