The North Devon Shipping Company 1851-1864

Abstract

This study focuses on the origins, work and eventual failure of the North Devon Shipping Company during the second half of the nineteenth century.  The problems the company faced, particularly those of acquiring different types of cargo in a very competitive market, are discussed as are the ships involved in the trade.  The company, like so many speculative ventures of this time, ended in failure and eventual dissolution.
