The Sànaro of Lakes Lésina and Varàno

By Marco Bonino, published May 1987

Abstract

Accompanied by nearly four pages of photographs and illustrations Marco Bonino describes the construction and heritage of the flat bottomed wooden Sànaro boat still found on the Lésina and Varàno Lakes on the northern shore of the Gargano promontory in Italy. After describing its construction in some detail: its outriggers, how it is rowed and sailed, he concludes that these features indicate it belongs to a family of similar archaic craft that spread from Turkey to Italy.
