The Van de Veldes

By W. Voorbeytel Cannenburg, published August 1950

This is a concise biography of the great marine artists Van de Velde elder and younger, respectively consummate draughtsman and master in oils.  It charts their known careers from the arrival of the English royalist fleet at Hellevoetsluis in 1648, through three Anglo-Dutch wars and a Swedish conflict, offering particular insight into their actual or supposed presence at each of the engagements and great state occasions that they so faithfully recorded on canvas and paper.  The probable reason for their migration to England (the poverty of Holland following the Anglo-Dutch wars) and appointment to Charles II is also described.
