Trials with H.M. Submarine Seraph and British Preparations to Defeat the Type XXI U-Boat, September-October 1944

Abstract

This article shows the speed with which the Admiralty reacted to the threat of the Type XXI U-Boats, firstly by identifying that it existed, then by converting HM Submarine Seraph to become the first of the ‘Slippery-S’ class. The Asdic trials which followed are described, together with the analysis of the U-boat threat. The Seraph trials and the results are examined.
