The Whitehead Story

Abstract

Robert Whitehead was born in 1823, son of the owner of a cotton mill. Robert did not join the family business but became an engineer who in later life invented a new underwater weapon, the self-propelled torpedo. Whitehead established a company which was later bought out by Vickers and Armstrong. In 1912, Frances Whitehead, granddaughter of Robert Whitehead married Austrian Captain Von Trapp and Robert thus became the great grandfather of the Von Trapp children, the subject of the film ‘The Sound of Music’.
